Hut Trip report: Day Three

This is a four-part post about backcountry hut skiing in Colorado. To read the previous post in this series, click here.

I woke up before 5am on Sunday, groggy but... excited. Another Tech grad, Mark, and I had made plans for the Dawn Patrol: To skin up by starlight, reaching the summit of New York Mountain in time to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately, at five in the morning, Mark was still recovering from the high stakes euchre tourney (and drinking) that had gone down the night before. Frustrated, and without someone to accompany me should something go wrong, I went back to bed.

I woke up for the second time at a more normal hour. This was the morning Tim, Ted, and I were slated to make breakfast. Apple pancakes were on the menu, and I set to peeling. We made two full boxes (20 servings apiece according to the nutrition facts) of pancake mix, and FOUR POUNDS of bacon. It was one o'clock by the time the last cake came off the griddle. Whew!

Ted, Tim, and I ruled the kitchen

As we cooks sat down for breakfast (more like brunch), the rest of the group set out to get at least one run above the hut. After our food settled, Ted and I set out with the same intent.

Ted is Happy

Ted is still Happy. Really.

Lianna is Happy

What can I say? I love tree skiing, and these trees were awesome. Chalk up another good day. Oh yeah, we ate some tasty chicken biriyani (props to Keith) and made plans. What plans? Stay tuned for the final post (and best day)...
